I’ve pulled out the ones I really like, check out the whole list here.
Age-otori (Japanese): To look worse after a haircut
Arigata-meiwaku (Japanese): An act someone does for you that you didn’t want to have them do and tried to avoid having them do, but they went ahead anyway, determined to do you a favor, and then things went wrong and caused you a lot of trouble, yet in the end social conventions required you to express gratitude
Backpfeifengesicht (German): A face badly in need of a fist
Bakku-shan (Japanese): A beautiful girl… as long as she’s being viewed from behind
Forelsket (Norwegian): The euphoria you experience when you are first falling in love
Gigil (pronounced Gheegle; Filipino): The urge to pinch or squeeze something that is unbearably cute
Ilunga (Tshiluba, Congo): A person who is ready to forgive any abuse for the first time, to tolerate it a second time, but never a third time
L’esprit de l’escalier (French): usually translated as “staircase wit,” is the act of thinking of a clever comeback when it is too late to deliver it
Mamihlapinatapai (Yaghan): A look between two people that suggests an unspoken, shared desire
Meraki (pronounced may-rah-kee; Greek): Doing something with soul, creativity, or love. It’s when you put something of yourself into what you’re doing
Taarradhin (Arabic): implies a happy solution for everyone, or “I win. You win.” It’s a way of reconciling without anyone losing face. Arabic has no word for “compromise,” in the sense of reaching an arrangement via struggle and disagreement
Tingo (Pascuense language of Easter Island): to borrow objects one by one from a neighbor’s house until there is nothing left
Waldeinsamkeit (German): The feeling of being alone in the woods
STICKERS! well, they will be soon.
some original billboard concepts. some obviously have way too much copy. for my final three I think I will go with the ones that say “hello doesn’t just lead to friendship, it leads to survival”, my pay off “be prepared, say hello” and
“hello = good neighbour
hello = friendship
hello = being alive”
some print ads i’m working on. art direction needs some work.
Copy down the bottom reads:
HI [Hazard Initiative] aims to bring back the golden period of neighbourly love. Getting to know the people on your street is one of the most important steps to being prepared for a natural disaster.
Be prepared, say hello.
HAHA! this is excellent. Thanks Becca.
the 2 degrees brand launch ad from last year i think. i have to really watch that my ad that references the smallness of nz does not copy this. good kiwi tone, rhys darby is great.

“This bit of interactive street art has recently been spotted all over New York City. The creator is unknown, but a small line of text at the bottom says “Living Exercises.” An inspiring concept for sure.”
THIS IS SOO COOL. maybe i could utilise something like this for my sticker campaign?
See it here
some scans from the workbook. got some lovely colour coding going on.
experiment #1.
pass the parcel … please …
just a wee exploration into the quality of neighbours i personally have around me. I made re-taped up and old parcel mum had sent me and popped it outside my neighbours front door. (nb. did this during the day so that they would have to return it to me after work. man i felt like a sifty person and was paranoid there was someone in the house watching my creepy antics)
results:
from about 6pm onwards i was anxiously waiting for them to return it. then i thought that they were lazy and waiting to do it the next day. BUT at about 9pm a lovely gentleman knocked on my door and said “i think this is you package? it turned up at my house”.
erin being the great flatmate she is acted totally surprised and asked him where he lived. cept he was slowly backing down the stairs so i dont think he was that keen to chat. i personally had never seen him before, but erin had.
oh well! success! there are still quality neighbours around.

Say exactly what’s on your mind with this set of letterpressed greeting cards. Grab a pen and customize each card to your liking. We’ve left the inside blank in case you have more than one word to say. See them here.
I liked them because they are similar to my coupon book idea. According to my extremely knowledgeable flatmate erin I am ‘on trend’ with this kind of thing as this card set has been featured on quite a few trend sites. yussss.
No matter our place, a common sense of public space bonds us. We need public spaces to walk and play, to make art and music, to shop and eat, to be silent.
